Local author and businessman, Gareth Streeter, named Parliamentary Spokesperson for Plymouth Sutton and Devonport
Plymouth Sutton and Devonport Conservatives have selected a Parliamentary Spokesperson to champion the policies that are right for Plymouth and take the fight to Labour ahead of the next General Election.
Gareth Streeter, a Plymouth-based writer and communications consultant, was selected at a special general meeting of local members on 21 April.
Gareth says, “Plymouth is my home. I was born here, went to school here and spent years working for Plymouth’s businesses. Last year, my partner and I moved back to Plymouth and decided to make it our home for the rest of our lives.
“Plymouth has benefited from 13 years of Conservative Government. We have seen real improvement in our local schools and significant job creation at Devonport Dockyard. The forthcoming Freeport will help Plymouth grasp the benefits of Brexit, bringing a new wave of investment to the shores of our Ocean City. Under Conservative Government, our higher and further education sector has flourished.
“But there is much more we need to do. Our transport infrastructure must continue to develop and it’s vital that we increase access to GPs and other crucial services. Plymouth City Centre must be restored to its former glory and continue to attract visitors and investors.
“Only the Conservatives can be trusted with Plymouth’s future. Labour remains in the grip of the militant left and a Labour Government will not prioritise spending on defence. Nor do they understand and value the trade, business and investment policies that represent the City’s best chance of growth and job creation. Every Labour Government in history has mismanaged the national finances, making it harder to invest in crucial public services such as schools and the NHS over the long term.
“Also important to Plymouth’s future, is retaining a Conservative Council. While Labour and the Independents have revelled in playing party politics, it is Conservatives on the Council that have offered a meaningful vision for our City. It is Conservatives that have restored order to our local finances and it is vital that we do not let Labour jeopardise their achievements.
“As Parliamentary Spokesperson, my immediate priority will be to support our hard-working Conservative candidates in the run up to the 4 May elections. A team with real energy, experience and vision for Plymouth.”
The role of Parliamentary Spokesperson is to engage with voters, community groups and businesses ahead of the next General Election. Over his career, Gareth has worked in charities and in education and has a wider-range of relevant experiences. As a former youth worker, he is committed to ensuring that every young person in Plymouth gets the best possible start in life and will engage with groups and stakeholders to champion policies that make this a greater reality across the City.
Gareth continues, “It’s no secret that I come from a family that have been at the forefront of Plymouth politics for many years. I was brought up to believe that when it comes to politics, actions speak louder than words. As well as being a strong voice for the City, I am committed to working with residents, businesses and community groups to make real and lasting difference to the issues that really matter to people.”
Today, Gareth runs a small communications consultancy business. He is also a published author who writes history books about the late-medieval and early-Tudor periods.
Tony Carson, Chairman of Plymouth Sutton and Devonport Conservatives says, “Plymouth is an historic City bursting with potential for the future. Nothing poses a bigger threat to the City’s prosperity than the combination of a Labour Council and a Labour Government. By selecting Gareth Streeter as our Parliamentary Spokesperson, we’re launching our campaign to turn the Parliamentary seat blue at the General Election and protect the real benefits that Conservative Government has secured for the City. Gareth is utterly committed to Plymouth and we’re excited about the relentless energy he will bring to our campaigning efforts.”
